All collections to be transferred at Safe Sound Archive are kept in our climate controlled storage. Items are taken one at a time from storage to the production rooms, literally "down the hall".
The reformatting of each item begins with a visual inspection. Many of the
worst ailments of old media can be seen by the trained eye. Acetates de-laminating
(above), oozing splices, quick checks for Sticky Shed Syndrome (right), are
best discovered by visual inspection.
All findings and work are logged into the database created for each project. With this information, patterns can be spotted within a collection, which inform, and usually speed the reformatting process and any conservation or restoration work: all fully documented for the next person who needs to access the collection -- whether tomorrow or in future generations.
